“So what made you decide to be an instructor?” I was whipping egg whites into soft peaks for the macron batter. “With how competitive you were in school, I won’t lie, I was surprised to see you at the school teaching.”
“I did have a job working as a sous chef after graduation.” She measured out the almond flour and poured it into a bowl. “Then I ran into Chef one day randomly.”
“Were you unhappy being a sous chef?”
“No,” she quickly said and grabbed some parchment paper. “He mentioned there was an opening, but he didn’t say anything about how I should apply for the position.” She was drawing small circles on the paper where the macaron batter would be placed. “I don’t know. When he shared the job I didn’t think much about it at first. Then I was home watching a show on The Baker’s Network and suddenly the job wouldn’t leave my mind.”
“Do you think you will ever be a chef in a restaurant again?”
“That’s a great question.” She continued drawing circles on another piece of parchment. “Probably not. I love helping the students.”
Morgan was not at all the person I had created in my mind. She was sexy, kind, and better yet, she loved to help others succeed. I moved closer to her and poured the whipped egg whites into the portioned out almond flour. “Chef is pretty lucky to have you.”
She bumped my hip. “I think I’m pretty lucky to have Chef.”
“So it’s a match made in heaven.” I turned to face her and wrapped my hand around her waist to pull her closer. “You know what?”
I loved how she looked up at me with the cutest smile. “What?”
“I think I’m the luckiest one of them all.” She scrunched her nose up. “What? Is the lucky talk getting ridiculous?”
“Just a little.” She went up on her tippy-toes and wrapped her arms around my neck. “So why are you the luckiest guy?”
“Well, if you didn’t take the job. When Chef called me, I could’ve been paired up with an older woman who hates measuring ingredients and only knows how to yell her questions.”
“Oh, yeah, I guess you are pretty lucky.”
I glanced over Morgan’s shoulder and noticed smoke billowing out of the oven. “Fuck.” I jumped back and reached for the hot pads. “You know this is all your fault,” I said, as I opened the door and waved the smoke away from my eyes.
“My fault?” She actually gasped which was hilarious. “How is this my fault?”
“Well if you weren’t so damn sexy.”
She picked up the timer. “Did you even set it?”
“Still blaming you.” I threw the charred remains of the macrons into the sink. “This is not like me. I never forget to set a timer or ignore items in an oven.”
“Yeah, I’m feeling a little distracted, too.” I was standing at the sink looking at the charred cookies. She walked up behind me, wrapped her arms around my waist, and rested her head on my back. “I’m not complaining though.
